Only Butyl rubber is suitable for ALL pond types and ALL ground conditions. It is a fully vulcanised material.

  • Not glued - which does not last.
  • It is completely non-toxic.
  • You do not take the risks associated with EPDM material which may be toxic.
  • Many materials compare themselves with Butyl and may claim some better characteristics, but this is normally not true.
  • Do not settle for second best to save a few pounds. Consider what your pond is actually costing. You do not want to rebuild it in a few years because of liner failure.

Do I need 0.75mm or 1.00mm Butyl?

British Butyl Rubber comes in two thicknesses, 0.75mm and 1.00mm.

0.75mm Butyl recommended for most flat sheet lined ponds. However, if it is not possible to use overlay liner protection, we recommend 1.00mm.

1.00mm Butyl is recommended for all box lined ponds and flat sheet lined ponds where overlay protection is not suitable.

Do I need liner protection underlay or overlay?

This is made of a tough spun polyester fibre, also referred to as ‘geotextile liner protection’. It helps protect the liner from stones or sharp objects both from above and below. The amount you need is automatically calculated for you by our online shop.

Underlay
We recommend using this with both flat sheet liners and box liners.

Overlay
We recommend that this is used with all flat sheet liners. It must be weighted down by soil, gravel or stones and is ideal for encouraging wildlife. Overlay is rarely used with box liners.

How much material do I need?

We make all of our pond liners individually for each pond, this means that you only buy the amount you need.

1. If you are ordering a flat sheet liner or box liner online, our calculator will work out how much liner, underlay or overlay you need.

All you need to do is enter the maximum depth, maximum width and maximum length of the pond, in feet and inches or metres and we do the rest. An extra amount is allowed on the flat sheet liners so that they can be anchored under stones or in an anchor trench.
