Many structures require lining so that they can be used to store liquids. Some, like building basements require lining (tanking) to keep liquids out. Often tanks that have been in service for many years and have started to leak are refurbished by fitting a liner.

Materials for Tank Lining

Tank linings must form to the exact shape of the structure but often have to be delivered to the enclosure through confined spaces so strong flexible materials are essential.

Liners are manufactured from the following materials.

Butyl and EPDM Rubber
Only vulcanisable materials are used so all liners can be supplied fully welded. Rubbers are suitable for water, most water soluble chemicals and acids. They are available both plain and nylon reinforced to suit a wide range of applications and suitable for operating temperatures from -30°C to +90°C.

Polypropylene
An excellent thermoplastic, used in these applications as a polypropylene coated nylon cloth. Can be used in many applications where material strength is essential and where its unique chemical resistances are required.

Elvaloy
A modified PVC, used in these applications as a coated nylon cloth, especially developed for containing petro-chemical products.

Other Materials
Linings are also produced using polyethylene and polyurethane materials if other alternatives are not suitable. However, all liners produced by Butyl Products Ltd. are all-welded liners so only weldable geomembranes are used.

Other materials
Special attention is paid to how and where the liners are fixed to the structures and how through liner pipes are sealed.

What we require

To design a lining system suitable for your application we need to know:-

  • Specification of the liquids which will come in contact with the liner.
  • Dimensions of the structure including maximum liquid levels.
  • Material from which the structure is made.
