EPDM rubber is a synthetic rubber (as is Butyl rubber) but with a wide variation of formulations. Many of these formulations are not weldable and some are toxic to wildlife. There are however also versions of EPDM membranes that are approved for drinking water use(WRAS approved) and that are weldable.
